tim drake's rules brain

I did promise I'd use this account for long form analysis of Batman characters' psychological problems. Something I was talking about on twitter the other day was that to me, one of Tim's primary drivers is his sense of duty -- his need to figure out the correct action and take it. This comes out either in family/social obligations ("I have to quit Robin because my dad said so and he's my dad") or in broader obligations he takes on ("I have to become Robin because Batman needs someone, and nobody else is doing it").

This trait of his is super compelling to me because it's both a strength and something that backfires on Tim constantly -- it's a big source of crunch. On twitter I called him the world's worst utilitarian: he will identify a need and then do pretty much anything short of murder to fill it, even if it tramples over things like his happiness or other people's boundaries.

i'm back in the batman hole and was thinking about doing the second part of this (about tim's loneliness), but on reflection all i really want to talk about are these panels from the story where tim's parents die:

tim gets a postcard from his parents, who say they will call him next week, or maybe the week after. tim says, if it helps stop all the arguments they've been having lately, they can stay away for months.ALT

tim loves his parents but is mad/sad/frustrated that they're constantly away. he is also very aware that they are mid at best at both parenting and their own relationship, and there's no real winning between "parents home, fighting" and "parents away, maybe getting along".

"if it helps stop all the arguments they've been having lately... they can stay away for months!" <- words of a kid who is upset and lonely but instantly ready to put his loneliness on an altar so his parents get the chance to fix their relationship. (we're circling back to his sense of duty again.) words of a kid who is not going to become the child of divorce he otherwise is fated to be, because orphanhood is coming for him first.

delicious meta tim drake he is just SUCH a character the busiest busy body of all time you think you have a problem its tim drakes problem now and he'll burn down everything to fix it and he wont ask permission the mosy annoying person to be right in all of creation he'd be a great lawyer
